History of NCAA Wrestling Tournament
The NCAA Wrestling Tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious single-elimination collegiate athletics tournaments in the United States. The first sanctioned tournament was held in 1928, making it one of the longest running, continuously held collegiate sports competitions in history.
Events are divided by weight classes, which vary slightly by year based on national standards and trends. Different classifications also exist for different age groups, such as high school or college divisions. The goal of each tournament is to determine the best wrestler in each weight class according to pre-set criteria determined by the NCAA and its partner conferences.
During regular season meets, athletes compete in head-to-head matchups to accumulate points through wins, losses and forfeiture events. At the end of a season, wrestlers with high scores on their win/loss record qualify for brackets and compete in a three day tournament for individual titles and recognition for their team as a whole. The scoring structure rewards complete domination: five points awarded for a fall victory; three points allocated if an opponent is sidelined due to injury; two points provided if an athlete wins with technical superiority; one point presented if an athlete defeats with riding time advantage; finally zero points given if a wrestler wins via decision (judges’ ruling).
Qualifying Criteria
In order to compete in the NCAA Wrestling Tournament 2022, athletes must meet specific qualifying criteria. To qualify for the tournament, an individual wrestler must compete in regular season competitions organized by NCAA member schools and/or independent organizations. In addition, wrestlers must earn a certain number of individual wrestler wins and team standings points to meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the tournament. Individual wrestler wins are determined based on a competitor’s performance in sanctioned collegiate matches during that season. Team standings points are earned based on a team’s success in NCAA-sanctioned tournaments or dual meets.
All individuals competing in the first stage of qualifying (regionals) must have accumulated at least twelve (12) team standing points during the regular season matches, dual meets or tournaments offered by their schools and/or independent organizations. The top sixteen (16) individuals at each weight class who have accumulated a sufficient number of individual wins and points as well as met all other criteria will qualify for advancement to the next level of competition – nationals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena April 14th – April 17th 2022 .
