Qualifying for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships 2022 involves attending qualifying events. The qualifying events for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships 2022 are divided into five regional championships and one national championship.

Regional Qualifications: Ten automatic bids are awarded to schools competing in each of five regional tournaments, comprised of institutions from different colleges across the nation. The regional tournaments are scheduled for March 12-13, 2022 and will be hosted by a variety of conference affiliate organizations listed below:

NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships

The NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships are the qualifying event for individual wrestlers to compete in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Tournament 2022. All other qualifying events for this tournament are conducted on the regional level, which is determined by each individual region’s selection committee. The NCAA Division II Championship tournament is a single-elimination tournament with an over-all qualification system. It will take place from March 11–13, 2022 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana and will feature 225 student athletes from all three divisions of participating schools competing in ten weight classes.

To qualify for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships a wrestler must first enter Regional tournaments and then finish amongst the top six placers of those tournaments to qualify for Nationals. This means that along with winning at least one match they must place at least 6th or better overall or not lose earlier than two matches. These Regional tournaments also serve as a preliminary round to determine seedings for Nationals and allow some commensurate points to be earned that prove beneficial towards being seeded favorably heading into Nationals.

Furthermore, each region may select up to four additional wild card selections depending on scores achieved throughout the season and placing within Regionals by top participants in each weight class who did not already qualify through Regionals. Once qualified any wrestler out of any region may compete in Nationals regardless from which region they come from; however their seedings may vary according to their Regional standings despite being qualified as Wild Card wrestlers. Depending on wild card selection it should also be noted that if there are more than 220 wrestlers overall fighting for title each weight class may have more than 20 competitors which would leave fewer than six places open for remaining participants total across other eight weights classes that did not already reach maximum amount qualifiers (25).

NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

The 2021 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships will be the 46th annual championship tournament hosted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the 2022 season. The tournament is scheduled to be held at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 4–5, 2022.

The following qualifying tournaments are used to select competitors for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships: Sectionals and regionals held throughout the country in February and March of the 2022 season; Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) held March 11–12, 2022; Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship/Crossover Tournament held February 18–19 and 26, 2022; Midwest Conference (MWC) Championship/National Collegiate Open joint tournament held February 19–20 and 25, 2022; Great Lakes Conference Challenge Tournament on March 11–12, 2022; Centennial Conference Championships on March 12, 2022;​ New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-New England Championships held February 20 and 24, 2021; University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on February 25 and 26, 2021; Western Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (WIWA) Invitational February 27-28 2021.

Qualifying Teams

Division I

The 2022 NCAA Wrestling Tournament will be held from March 17-19 and will feature teams from all three NCAA divisions. In Division I, the top two teams per conference and the top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify to compete. This means that there could be upwards of 50 qualifying teams competing at the tournament.

To qualify for the tournament, a Division I team must finish high enough in their conference rankings or have an individual wrestler place in the top positions at their respective weight class. Conferences range from four to ten teams, with each competing for ranking points throughout their regular season schedule. Once the regular season ends and rankings are finalized, these points determine which teams qualify for the tournament. Four wrestlers in each weight class (133 lbs., 141 lbs., 149 lbs., 157 lbs., 165 lbs., 174 lbs., 184 lbs., 195 lbs., 220 lbs. and 285 lbs.) also qualify directly from their performances during regular season competition.

Division II

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Wrestling Tournament 2022 will be held in the United States from March 10 to March 13, 2022 in St. Louis, Missouri. As of 2021, the tournament features a field of 330 wrestlers from Division I and II schools competing in 10 weight classes for team and individual national titles.

A total of 164 Division II schools competed for berths to the NCAA Wrestling Tournament 2022 in one of two ways. Each school nominated up to two “Division II allocated qualifiers” for spots at the tournament, with each wrestler assigned a weight class based on their performances in designated qualifying events throughout the 2021 season; these wrestlers cannot qualify from any other source than allocation. Alternatively, input rank is available for those wishing to earn at-large individual bids or team points by way of student-athlete performance during qualifying events throughout the 2021 season; these at-large qualification criteria are determined by coaches’ polls combined with performances at regional tournaments and dual meets.

In addition to allocating bids as mentioned above, Division II teams seek a second opportunity by vying for one of thirteen automatic qualifier spots awarded each year through conference competition. The eight conference champions automatically qualify along with five wildcard honorees selected by committee members based on noteworthy wins at dual meet and tournament levels during that same season.

Division III

The 2022 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships is set to take place between March 11th and 12th at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia. This annual tournament will serve as the national championship for college athletes who compete in Division III wrestling. The field will consist of a total of 287 wrestlers with each division receiving an allotment based on total wresters competing per school:

Division I – 84 wrestlers

Division II – 221 wrestlers

Division III – 57 wrestlers

The team and individual qualifiers for the tournament are determined using the following criteria:

• Top-3 finishers from each weight class in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships;
• The athletes receiving an automatic invitation from their conference;
• Any remaining at-large bids awarded by the NCAA Wrestling Committee;
• A maximum of two earned National Qualifiers at each weight class from a single institution.

In addition, wild-card berths can be awarded by the committee to individual student-athletes who have completed their season but have not been able to qualify for automatic bids or earned entry into Nationals via their regional result.

Qualifying Wrestlers

The NCAA Wrestling Tournament is an annual event that showcases the best of college wrestlers from all corners of the country.

Division I

The 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will take place from March 17th to March 19th 2022 in St. Louis, Missouri. All 10 weight classes (125 to Hwt) of Division I wrestling will be on display during this tournament as the top wrestlers in the nation battle it out for an individual or team national title.

To qualify for the tournament, a wrestler must compete in a minimum of five matches at his weight class within a designated qualifying time period. During the qualifying time period,which is usually four weeks prior to the tournament start date, wrestlers must have at least one win or not more than one loss against an opponent from an equal, higher or lower division school while competing in that weight class. Wrestlers may compete in any combination of dual meets and tournaments over this timeframe as long as they satisfy all criteria set forth by their respective conference. Wrestlers may also qualify through conference championships.

Wrestlers outside of Division I will not be accepted into the tournament unless they attain at least a .500 win-loss record against Division I opponents over this qualification period and meet all other criteria imposed by their conference or institution’s athletic department. The number of qualifying athletes per weight class can vary each year; however, there are typically 33-35 wrestlers accepted for each class plus any additional exemptions added by various institutions and organizations. As such, the field is sure to be full of top-tier talent ready to go head-to-head during another exciting NCAA Wrestling season!

Division II

The 2022 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will take place from March 10th to the 12th at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This three-day event will bring together wrestlers from across the nation who have qualified to compete for individual and team national titles.

All NCAA Division II institutions are eligible to enter up to 10 wrestlers in the Division II Championships. To qualify for this tournament, athletes must achieve a minimum of 25 points between October through mid-February. These points are accrued by earned places at various qualifying tournaments throughout the season. Additionally, all participants must meet individual and/or team minimum criteria in order to be eligible for qualification into individuals or teams events of the National Tournament.

Division II athletes may also qualify by fulfilling one or both of these criteria:

• Individuals: Have reached an eligibility point total of 0 or greater prior to Regional competition
• Teams: Achieve a Regional placement that qualifies them as a top 3 finishing teams in their region prior to National competition

At this pinnacle event, athletes will compete against each other until one wrestler is crowned national champion and their school is crowned national team champion.

Division III

Division III wrestlers must meet a certain set of standards to qualify for the competition. In order to be eligible to compete, wrestlers must possess an amateur status and have at least twelve months of continuous residence in the state or region they are representing. Individuals must also be at least sixteen years of age on the day of the competition.

As an additional requirement, Division III wrestlers must also have held a consecutive competitive year in any U.S. wrestling style from the period from 2 September to 1 September prior to the date of entry into competition.

Any wrestler who has participated in more than ten sanctioned events since September 1st, or has earned a national ranking by any U.S. National Wrestling Committee within three years prior to the start of their competitive year is not allowed in Division III competition and will not receive a bid invitation or letter of acceptance into competition if they miss this requirement by one event or ranking point respectively.

Tournament Format

The 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournament is a two-day event that will take place at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, beginning on March 18th 2022. This tournament will be the first Division I wrestling tournament since the pandemic, and it will feature some of the best wrestlers from all over the US.

Division I

Division I of the NCAA Wrestling Tournament will take place from March 17-19, 2022, in St. Louis, Missouri. This tournament is a double elimination tournament, which means that each wrestler must lose twice before being eliminated from competition. The team title will be awarded to the program with the most points based on individual performances in each weight class.

The top 12 Division I wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the NCAA Wrestling Tournament. At Regionals, wrestlers earn a spot in the tournament by finishing first or second (or sometimes third). To determine regional qualification for automatic berths, conference championship results are used if necessary.

In Division I, there are 10 weight classes which makes up the total line up: 125 lbs., 133 lbs., 141 lbs., 149 lbs., 157 lbs., 165 lbs., 174 lbs., 184 lbs., 197 lbs. and 285 pounds (Heavyweight). In addition to individual performance points during competition, bonus points can be earned during Quarterfinal and Semifinals matches as well as Consolation matches.

Division II

The NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships is the national championship tournament for college wrestlers in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The tournament will take place on March 10-13, 2022 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Fairbanks, Alaska. All wrestlers qualify to compete through the qualifiers held by their respective regions. The championships are a single elimination tournament and consist of one round each day until four individual champions in each weight class are crowned.

To qualify for the Division II National Championships, a wrestler must earn enough points throughout the qualifying season by placing in Division II competitions such as regionals, conference tournaments and national events like the USA Wrestling/Cliff Keen National Duals or other college open tournaments. Specifically, a wrestler needs to finish 1st through 3rd in one’s regionals tournament or earn sufficient AVCA rankings score points throughout the regular season to advance as an at-large qualifier.

The individual champion of each weight class will receive an automatic bid to compete in that same weight class at the following NCAA Division I Championships and be recognized on an All-American level.

Division III

The NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships 2022 will be held at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The competition begins on March 10, 2022 with opening ceremonies and concludes with the championship finals on March 13, 2022. The field of wrestlers is divided into eight designated weight classes for both men and women athletes from each division.

In Division III wrestling competitions, qualifiers are determined through regionally-held tournaments conducted by individual conferences. Division II wrestlers will compete in two divisions: East and West.
